Brixadi Dosage for Opioid Use Disorder

The administration frequency and dosage of Brixadi for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) can vary depending on whether you're currently on oral buprenorphine tablets.

For Those Not Taking Oral Buprenorphine

First Steps: If you're not on oral buprenorphine, your healthcare professional may likely prescribe at least one dose of oral buprenorphine initially. This step ensures you do not experience withdrawal symptoms upon stopping opioids.*

Next Steps: After the initial dose is recevied, you'll likely start with weekly Brixadi injections. The regimen includes:
  • One 16-mg injection on the first day.
  • One 8-mg injection up to three days later.
  • Subsequently, 24 mg of Brixadi once every week.
Based on the drug's efficacy and any side effects you might experience, your healthcare professional may consider increasing your dosage to 32 mg of Brixadi weekly.

For Those Already Taking Oral Buprenorphine

If you're already using oral buprenorphine, your healthcare provider might transition you to either weekly or monthly Brixadi injections. The dosage will correspond to your current oral buprenorphine intake, as summarized below:
  • 6 mg or less/day: 8 mg Brixadi weekly. (No monthly dosage recommended.)
  • 8–10 mg/day: Either 16 mg Brixadi weekly or 64 mg monthly.
  • 12–16 mg/day: Either 24 mg Brixadi weekly or 96 mg monthly.
  • 18–24 mg/day: Either 32 mg Brixadi weekly or 128 mg monthly.
*Note: Withdrawal symptoms are potential side effects arising from ceasing a drug upon which the body has developed dependence. In such cases, the body requires the drug for normal functioning.

Consistency in Timing

Brixadi is administered either weekly or monthly via injection. For the drug to work optimally, it's beneficial to maintain a consistent schedule, getting the injection around the same time each week or month. This consistency ensures a stable concentration of the drug in your system.

Missed Dose Protocol

Should you miss a scheduled injection appointment, it's essential to contact your healthcare provider promptly. They will guide you on rescheduling and ensuring you get back on track.

Duration of Treatment

Brixadi can be considered for long-term treatment. If assessments by you and your physician deem the medication both safe and effective, a prolonged regimen is likely.

Understanding Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a pivotal medication used in the battle against opioid addiction, and it's essential to understand its role and function in this context.

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid medication derived from thebaine, an alkaloid found in the opium poppy. Unlike other opioids, buprenorphine is classified as a partial opioid agonist. This means it can produce effects similar to opioids (like pain relief), but these effects have a ceiling, limiting the risk of respiratory depression, a dangerous side effect seen with other opioids.

How Does Buprenorphine Work?

In the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD), buprenorphine's mechanism of action is twofold:

Binding to Opioid Receptors: Buprenorphine attaches itself to the same receptors in the brain that opioids do. By doing so, it can mitigate cravings and withdrawal symptoms in individuals who are dependent on or addicted to opioids.

Partial Activation: While buprenorphine does activate these opioid receptors, it doesn't do so fully. This partial activation provides relief without producing the euphoric "high" that is often associated with opioid abuse. This characteristic makes buprenorphine less likely to be misused compared to full opioid agonists.

Buprenorphine as a Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT)

Buprenorphine plays a central role in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for OUD. MAT combines behavioral therapy and medications to treat substance use disorders. When used as directed and in combination with therapy, buprenorphine is effective, safe, and reduces the risk of overdose.

Buprenorphine is available in various formulations. While some are standalone products, others combine buprenorphine with naloxone, a medication that counteracts opioid effects, to further reduce the potential for misuse. Common brands include Suboxone®, Subutex, and the discussed Brixadi.

Like all medications, buprenorphine must be used under a healthcare professional's guidance. While it offers a safer alternative to other opioids, there are potential side effects and interactions to consider.

Buprenorphine stands as a revolutionary medication in the sphere of addiction treatment, offering hope to countless individuals struggling with opioid dependence.

Frequently Asked Questions about Brixadi

How does Brixadi compare with Sublocade?

Brixadi and Sublocade are both used in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in adults. They each contain an extended-release form of buprenorphine, administered as a subcutaneous injection. While doses of both medications can be given monthly, Brixadi offers an additional option of weekly administration. For a deeper dive into their dosages, refer to our detailed sections on Brixadi and Sublocade or consult with your healthcare professional.

What makes Brixadi effective in treating OUD?

Brixadi is classified as a partial opioid agonist. It binds to the body's opioid receptors but doesn't activate these receptors as potently as other opioids. As a result, it can diminish opioid cravings without producing the euphoric sensations typical of other opioids. Additionally, Brixadi can help mitigate withdrawal symptoms that might arise from ceasing other opioids. If you're curious about the mechanism of Brixadi, it's best to discuss with a medical expert.

Can prolonged Brixadi use result in lasting side effects?

Yes, long-term usage of Brixadi might lead to certain side effects. One such condition is adrenal insufficiency, wherein the adrenal glands underproduce the hormone cortisol, leading to symptoms like fatigue, appetite loss, and muscle weakness. Brixadi can also, in rare instances, lead to liver issues, including liver failure. It's also important to note that abruptly stopping Brixadi, especially after extended use, might induce withdrawal symptoms. If concerns about long-term side effects arise, it's always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional.
