Porch Light Health spoke with KKCO 11 News on a proposed bill that could add regulations to Kratom in Colorado.

A bill was sent to the governor’s desk recently to make some changes to the laws regarding kratom. Reporter Wiley Mitchell spoke to an addiction counseling center who deals with kratom addiction frequently.

If signed, a new bill can make a lot of regulation changes to kratom in Colorado.
Eleanor Davis
People take it because they’re told that it’s just an herbal supplement. It’ll help you relax. It’ll help you with pain, and they don’t realize that it’s an addictive drug.
Wylee Mitchell
Kratom is an herbal substance that has opioid-type effects. A proposed bill headed to the governor’s desk would require Kratom packaging to be behind the counter, change the buying age to 21, add a warning label for the dosage in drug interaction concerns, and add a warning label for pregnant women.
Charles Jernigan
I think any control, better control or more restrictions on those type of drugs is very good as a deterrent for people, right? Because right now there is none. If this passes, it least gives us a little bit better control.
Wylee Mitchell
This is the second version of the proposed bill. The original one had regulations similar to cannabis, but the new version is less strict.
Eleanor Davis
Those warning labels are shown to be effective. So I think people knowing that what they’re about to take is an addictive substance helps them make an informed decision about whether or not they’re going to use this substance or not.
Charles Jernigan
One of the most important things, though, is public awareness, right? And if you get better public awareness, then people have an understanding of it better and people are more apt to prevent using it, right?
Wylee Mitchell
Now, at this point, it’s hard to tell if Governor Polis will choose to sign the bill or not, but we’ll keep you updated. In Grand Junction, I’m Wiley Mitchell reporting.
