Module Overview

This module offers an in-depth exploration of the clinical, neurobiological, and psychosocial dimensions of opioid use disorder. Beginning with history, definitions, and diagnostic frameworks, it progresses through evidence-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment strategies, population-specific considerations, and long-term recovery planning. Emphasis is placed on individualized, patient-centered care, the integration of harm reduction, and multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize outcomes for people with OUD across diverse settings and stages of recovery.

Global Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:

Describe core principles of compassionate, patient-centered addiction care, including the practical application of harm reduction strategies in clinical settings.
Explain key neurobiological mechanisms of substance use disorders and relate these mechanisms to patient behavior, relapse risk, and recovery trajectories.
Select and use basic motivational interviewing techniques and validated screening tools to identify substance use disorders and inform initial clinical decision-making.
Identify and initiate evidence-based pharmacologic and behavioral treatment options for substance use disorders, consistent with the learner’s professional scope of practice.
Demonstrate an understanding of whole-person, team-based care by integrating healthcare, behavioral health, social services, and legal considerations into treatment planning.
Apply practical, recovery-oriented strategies to respond to crises, relapse, and common real-world barriers encountered in early addiction treatment settings.

Module 3 Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, learners will be able to:

Summarize the current epidemiology and public health impact of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)—including prevalence, mortality/morbidity, disparities by age group, and treatment-gap implications—and identify at least 2 actionable opportunities for earlier intervention in their clinical setting.
Implement evidence-based AUD screening in routine care by selecting and administering an appropriate tool (e.g., AUDIT-C/AUDIT, single-item NIAAA screen, population-specific tools such as T-ACE/TWEAK/CRAFFT) and documenting next-step actions (brief counseling/SBIRT/diagnostic assessment/referral)
Apply DSM-5 criteria to diagnose AUD and classify severity (mild/moderate/severe) using standardized documentation, and communicate the diagnosis using non-stigmatizing, patient-centered language including simulated vignettes
Conduct a comprehensive, trauma-informed biopsychosocial assessment (including ASAM multidimensional factors) and interpret key laboratory/biomarker patterns and medical complications (e.g., liver disease, pancreatitis, cardiometabolic risk, malignancy risk, nutritional deficiencies such as thiamine-related syndromes) to prioritize immediate safety needs and individualize the initial care plan in 4/5 case scenarios.
Stratify alcohol withdrawal risk and select the appropriate level of care (outpatient vs. inpatient/ICU) using clinical features and standardized tools (e.g., CIWA-Ar), and outline a withdrawal management approach that includes supportive care, vitamin/electrolyte management (including thiamine before glucose when indicated), monitoring frequency, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy in ≥90% of withdrawal cases on assessment.
Develop and justify an integrated, longitudinal AUD treatment plan that incorporates (a) pharmacotherapy selection and monitoring (FDA-approved and appropriate off-label options with contraindications/precautions), (b) evidence-based behavioral interventions and recovery supports, (c) relapse prevention/return-to-use response strategies, (d) co-occurring psychiatric/medical condition management, and (e) legal/ethical obligations (confidentiality, informed consent/capacity, mandated treatment boundaries).
